MY BELIEFS AND REFLECTIONS
Maintaining a current understanding and ongoing awareness of contemporary pedagogical strategies that assist in enabling excellent learning environments is a critical function of a leader. I am aware of the need to regularly build further cognizance around how various learning and digital tools are increasingly impacting the lives of students and staff. Digital tools are increasingly becoming the tools of modern literacy and the preferred forms of social interaction. Therefore it is critically important to recognize the benefits, pitfalls, and challenges that teachers face when they choose to integrate these technologies into the classroom and educational opportunities for students. My ongoing work and connection with teachers allows me to consult, collaborate and understand the challenges in changing pedagogy and practice while learning these new digital tools. I consistently seek to build capacity within our staff across the jurisdiction through mentorship and opportunities such as communities of practice that are focused on 21st century learning.
Critical personal skills and behaviors are necessary to accomplish success in all of these leadership domains. I believe that while communicating directly in an honest and respectful manner it is possible to lead in an innovative manner that encourages colleagues to adopt new approaches that ultimately results in an engaging learning environment. As a learning organization, our goals need to be focused on fostering success for all learners – staff, students, parents and community members. I believe in working collaboratively with other formal and informal leaders to ensure that resources, frameworks and structures are solidly in place to have scalable, reliable systems and infrastructure that meets the emerging 21st century learning needs.
COMMENTS FROM COLLEAGUES
You seek first to understand, and then try to fit the right technology to my needs. I'm sure it would sometimes be easier to try and force my needs to fit the learning resource or technology, but you never take that road as the default position.
Mark is a great leader and mentor and I'm lucky to have had a chance to work with him.
